ATV Trailers - A Guide to Buying an ATV Trailer

ATV trailers are attached to the rear end of an ATV through a trailer hitch, and normally have small singular or tandem wheels that make it possible for them to be towed. They can be used in a variety of places and for different purposes. They can be used in carrying farm goods and supplies, home furniture, and even smaller vehicles. Some ATV trailers have openings at the back to double as an ATV spreader (for dispensing fertilizers, grains, seeds, or any other similar material), or unfolds to form a ramp for ease in loading and unloading other vehicles.

Kinds of trailers

Dump Trailers: Trailers of this kind come with slanted or curved rear walls for dispensing material. They are more often than not have deeper compartments and are smaller compared to bed trailers.

Bed Trailers: Also known as trailer carts, bed trailers come box-shaped and have enclosures on about three or four of the sides. The walls then can normally be collapsed for easier loading and unloading.

Buying tips

Wheels: For bigger-sized trailers, look for wheels that come with tandem-axle wheels for increased speeds and reductions in drawn power from an ATV. Because it has two wheels to push the trailer on both sides, load weight is distributed better causing them to move faster than trailers with single-axle wheels.

Capacity: Choose ATV trailers that would fit your intended purpose. For transporting heavier items such as motorcycles and farm equipment, look for a trailer that has a loading capacity of more than 1000 pounds. Take into consideration as well the total weight of the items you want to load, that includes all accessories, equipment, and fuel.
